Hard shell capsule fillers are used to fill capsules with drugs in pellet, liquid, or powder form. Highly precise, they ensure consistent doses of active ingredients for prescription medications, over-the-counter drugs, and dietary supplements. There are three main types. Manual fillers are hand operated and suit small laboratories that need to minimize wastage, semi-automatic fillers handle the main operations but still need some human input, and automatic models run the whole process start to finish. At their most basic, capsule fillers load exact quantities of drugs into capsules that the user places in a tray to ensure precision, while more advanced models have additional features, including loading and uncapping empty capsules, fitting caps and sealing, and removing the finished product using a conveyor system. Production capacity ranges from 500 pieces an hour to around 15,000 pieces an hour, with most machines processing #000 to #5.
