Wet granulators combine powder with liquid to create granules, while fluid bed equipment suspends solid particles in a stream of air to make them act like a boiling liquid. In the pharmaceutical industry, manufacturers use wet granulators to turn powder into tablets or capsules of a uniform shape and fluid bed equipment to remove the moisture from the granules. The main types of wet granulators are high-shear mixer granulators, low-shear or planetary mixers, fluidized bed granulators, twin-screw granulators, and oscillating granulators. They are designed either for labs or industrial settings, such as in terms of granule size output, impeller speed, and chopper speed. Fluid bed equipment may use a top spray processor (most common for fluid bed granulators), bottom spray processor, or tangential spray process, with a rotating disk and side spray nozzle (most common for high-density pellet production).
