Sanofi has completed its acquisition of rare disease specialist Blueprint Medicines Corporation in a deal valued at approximately $9.1 billion.
Through the deal, first revealed in June, Blueprint becomes a wholly-owned subsidiary of Sanofi. Blueprint specializes in diseases driven by mutations in the KIT gene, including the rare immunological disease systemic mastocytosis (SM), which is characterized by the accumulation and activation of aberrant mast cells in bone marrow, skin, the gastrointestinal tract, and other organs.
The acquisition includes Blueprint’s Ayvakit/Ayvakyt, the only approved medicine in the U.S and the EU for advanced and indolent SM. Ayvakit won FDA approval for the treatment of advanced SM in June 2021 and for indolent SM in May 2023.
Sanofi will also pick up elenestinib, an oral investigational highly-selective KIT D816V inhibitor for SM currently in phase 2/3 studies as well as BLU-808, an investigational oral highly-selective wild-type KIT inhibitor.
