President Trump has sent letters to 17 pharma companies demanding they bring down the prices of prescription drugs in the U.S. to match the lowest price offered in other developed nations, the White House announced today.
Letters were sent to AbbVie, Amgen, AstraZeneca, Boehringer Ingelheim, Bristol Myers Squibb, Eli Lilly, EMD Serono, Genentech, Gilead, GSK, Johnson & Johnson, Merck, Novartis, Novo Nordisk, Pfizer, Regeneron, and Sanofi. Trump posted the individual letters on Truth Social.
In the letters, Trump referenced his controversial May 12, 2025 Most Favored Nation (MFN) Executive Order in which the administration seeks to end the “purposeful scheme in which drug manufacturers deeply discount their products to access foreign markets, and subsidize that decrease through enormously high prices in the United States.”
The letters outlined four specific actions that manufacturers must take within the next 60 days, by September 29, 2025:
-Provide MFN prices for all drugs to every single Medicaid patient
-Guarantee MFN pricing for newly launched drugs
-Return increased revenues from raised drug prices abroad to American patients and taxpayers
-Adopt models to sell drugs directly to consumers or businesses, ensuring that all Americans get the same MFN prices that companies offer to third-party payers
The letters inform manufacturers that if they “refuse to step up,” the government “will deploy every tool in our arsenal to protect American families from continued abusive drug pricing practices.”
