TrumpRx, the direct-to-consumer prescription drug platform, has launched after a slight delay.
The portal gives consumers discounts on brand-name drugs when they pay in cash instead of using health insurance. Before being able to buy medication, users must declare that they are not enrolled in a government insurance program and that they will not seek insurance reimbursement. Once they have agreed to these terms, customers receive coupons for the drugs — it is not possible to make purchases through the platform.
Currently, TrumpRx offers 43 drugs from five companies to treat a variety of conditions. Another 11 pharmaceutical companies have already come to agreements with the Trump administration to list some of their drugs at a later date. The companies choose what prices they offer the drugs, which has led to discounts ranging from 33% to 93%. It is expected to only result in savings for consumers who do not have insurance, as copays are likely to be lower than the cash prices. However, it may also be useful for customers looking to acquire prescription drugs that their insurance does not cover.
