AstraZeneca has reported positive results in its phase 2b trials for its oral small molecule GLP-1 receptor agonist (RA) elecoglipron.
In the VISTA trial of patients with obesity or overweight, elecoglipron led to 11.8% weight loss at 36 weeks, compared 0.3% weight loss with a placebo. In the SOLSTICE trial of adults with type 2 diabetes, the drug lowered HbA1c levels by 1.9% from baseline at 26 weeks, compared to a reduction of 0.2% with the placebo. Both trials used at dose of 75 mg. The safety profile of elecoglipron was comparable to other GLP-1 RAs.
AstraZeneca is now advancing the drug into an extensive phase 3 program in obesity and type 2 diabetes. The aim is to further enhance the tolerability profile and to explore the impact on long-term cardiovascular and kidney health.
