Novo Licenses Hengrui Once-Weekly Obesity Pill in Potential $2.6B Deal

Novo Nordisk has obtained exclusive rights to develop, manufacture, and commercialize HRS-1596, an oral obesity drug from Hengrui Pharma.

HRS-1596 is a phase 1-ready glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) and gastric inhibitory polypeptide (GIP) dual receptor agonist. The pill has the potential for once-weekly dosing for weight loss and improved glycemic control in patients with obesity, type 2 diabetes, and other metabolic diseases. It uses the combined mechanisms of appetite suppression, stimulation of insulin secretion, and enhanced insulin sensitivity.

The exclusive license agreement has a potential value of up to $2.6 billion, consisting of $300 million in upfront payments and additional revenue from sales royalties. Novo will have global exclusive rights, excluding mainland China, Hong Kong, Macao, and Taiwan.
