Blending Efficacy of PROSOLV® SMCC with Caffeine by Near-Infrared Spectroscopy

Blending Efficacy of PROSOLV® SMCC with Caffeine by Near-Infrared Spectroscopy

In drug production, manufacturing efficiency and the effectiveness of the final product largely depend on the blending process. In this study from JRS Pharma, a series of blending experiments used near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) to compare the uniformity of caffeine in blends with co-processed silicified microcrystalline cellulose (PROSOLV® SMCC) versus physical blends of microcrystalline cellulose and colloidal silicon dioxide (CSD).

For this un-optimized formulation with a challenging active, PROSOLV® SMCC delivered faster blend uniformity, improved tablet content uniformity, increased tablet hardness and reduced ejection forces compared with MCC blended with CSD glidant.
