Axel’s projects include Bitumen Beyond Combustion—advancing non-combustion products from Alberta oilsands bitumen—and Towards Low-GHG Emissions from Energy Use in Select Industry Sectors, a global project of the International Council of Academies of Engineering and Technological Societies (CAETS).

Previously, he served as the inaugural Chair in Foresight at the Alberta Research Council and as president of Memorial University of Newfoundland, the Canadian Commission for UNESCO, and the Canadian Academy of Engineering. He also served as Dean of Applied Science and Professor of Chemical Engineering at the University of British Columbia.

Appointed to the Order of Canada in 2008, Axel holds B.Sc., M.Sc., and Ph.D. degrees in Chemical Engineering.
