Pfizer has announced an agreement with the Trump Administration aimed at ensuring U.S. patients pay lower prices for prescription medicines while strengthening America’s role as the global biopharma leader.
Back in July, Trump sent letters to 17 leading pharma manufacturers outlining the steps they must take to bring down the prices of prescription drugs in the U.S. to match the lowest price offered in other developed nations.
The letters outlined four specific actions that manufacturers must take within the next 60 days, by September 29, 2025:
-Provide Most Favored Nation (MFN) prices for all drugs to every single Medicaid patient
-Guarantee MFN pricing for newly launched drugs
-Return increased revenues from raised drug prices abroad to American patients and taxpayers
-Adopt models to sell drugs directly to consumers or businesses, ensuring that all Americans get the same MFN prices that companies offer to third-party payers
Now, in response to the four points covered in the letter, Pfizer has voluntarily agreed to implement specific measures designed to ensure Americans receive comparable drug prices to those available in other developed countries and pricing newly launched medicines at parity with other key developed markets.
Pfizer will also participate in a direct purchasing platform, TrumpRx.gov, that will allow American patients to purchase medicines from Pfizer at a significant discount. The large majority of the company’s primary care treatments and some select specialty brands will be offered at savings that will range as high as 85% and on average 50%.
The government will grant Pfizer a three-year grace period during which time Pfizer products under a Section 232 investigation won't face tariffs, provided the company continues to invest in U.S. manufacturing.
